How to bet on Basketball?

March Madness – What are the main markets and how do they work?

Typically, most users will bet on one of three markets for March Madness. The first is called moneyline. Moneyline is simply which team you believe will win the match. You have the option of placing a wager on Team A or Team B. Now let’s say the line for Team A to win is +100. In order to win $100, you would have to place a $100 wager. This is also known as even money. However let’s say Team B is -125. In order to win $100, you would have to place a $125 wager. The (-) indication on a line means that team is projected as the favorite to win the game. When betting, remember that (-) means you have to lay more in your wager than you will receive if you win. The (+) means you will get the same or more value than your original wager if you win.

This notion listed above also applies for the second main market, spread. In this market, you are betting on the outcome of the game but whether or not a certain team performs better or worse than expected. Let’s say the spread on a game is 4.5. Team A is -4.5 while Team B is +4.5. This is the book’s way of telling you that this game will either finish with a 4-point or 5-point margin favoring the team Team A. In order to win betting on Team A, they would have to win by 5 or more points. If you bet Team B, they either have to lose by 4 or less, or win outright. Some may see this as an advantage considering Team B does not have to win for their bet to win.

Lastly, the total points market. Just as it sounds, you are betting whether or not both teams will combine for more or less than the projected total of the game. The odds for this market will be very similar to the odds of the spread. Usually, totals will end in .5 to prevent any possible pushes where money is returned to the user.
